creative zen - touch

A loving tribute to mp3 players, which is exactly right up my alley. As many of you know (or maybe have noticed some in my previous blog posts), I have been in full blown mp3 player nostalgia mode for the last few months, reminiscing on how mp3 players have been such an essential part of my music listening history. The same mp3 player I referenced in my Video 2000 post was the same player I was using to fall in love with Vektroid's Telnet Erotika back in early 2011, my go-to album when I was doing everybody's dishes (well, I should revise this: it was either Telnet Erotika or some sort of kindasorta jangly shoegaze album playing), and that same mp3 player was used a year later during my daily walks around the park near my house, listening to things like Seahawks' Tramadol Beach, Outlands' Com Ocean, Whitewoods' Beach Walk, and some of the early pre-coined vaporwave albums. It eventually became flooded with future Fortune 500 releases, and that park was where I first thought of The Music of the Now Age, and I wondered "Will artists even actually send me tracks? I hope so."

But with this album being based in 2005, the year the Creative Zen Touch was brought into the world, let's really go back in time here to my first mp3 player which looked a lot like this (but navy). It was given to me by my bestie's cousin after he'd stolen it from a Big Lots. He had very large Tripp pants, and he had a history of seeing just how much he could successfully smuggle into those pants in one go. My friends and I watched him leave with 50 manga titles from a Books-A-Million once, seeing if he could actually pull it off (still insane that he did, as the bulky pockets of his pants made it stupidly obvious), and we were keeled over laughing in the corner of a cookbook aisle.

One night, we met a new group of friends at Books-A-Million, and after the store closed, we chose to drive over to the park that was about five or so minutes away. It was a small car, and there were nine of us. The mp3 player-stealing cousin voluntarily chose the trunk, where he and another trunk friend loudly sang Gorillaz' Clint Eastwood to the rest of us up front who were crammed in and sitting in each others' laps, giggling like a bunch of hyenas. One of my friends fell in love with a girl from the group we'd met that night, and they later had a child or two. I always thought that was cute, looking back.

I'm getting way way way into tangent mode, whoops. All of that to say: the mp3 player that my bestie's cousin grabbed for me has also been linked to many fond memories of my later high school years, finally getting through a very rough depression, developing friendships, and finally ungluing myself from my computer and going out for a change. Cherry Cola by Eagles of Death Metal is forever affiliated with swinging on a swing set behind a Salvation Army gym my class had gone to on a field trip. Alala by Cansei de Ser Sexy will always be linked to me flipping through music trivia books and biographies at Books-A-Million, hoping that music wasn't leaking out through my headphones too badly. Cowbell by Tapes 'n Tapes was never taken out of mp3 player rotation, as that was my go-to cheering up anthem. That will forever be tied to dancing in my bestie's kitchen, the song blaring on her mom's computer.

Other songs on my mp3 player:

With only 128MB of storage space on it, I made it work. I think I had 16-18 tracks at most on that thing. It felt like a mixtape I could always have on me, something that didn't require some sort of accompanying player, something I could just immediately fire up and have playing when I needed it. Now, I look at it as a fond time capsule. A 20 year old time capsule. What the fuck.

Enjoy an ode to the impact of mp3 players on many of us in the mid-2000s, and how mp3 players always had an assortment of random songs preloaded upon booting it up for the first time, and think about how these ringtone-y songs have a way of sending someone back in time. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going into my Razr's ringtone settings to make cost of comfort my alarm.

Video 2000 - Midnight Ride & Remixes

A Trip Down Memory Lane, starring luxury elite:

Video 2000, if I recall correctly, was recommended to me through the SoundCloud algorithm, and seeing comments from Liz of SPF420 and Reverb Lite on one of his tracks basically resulted in an insta-click on the play button. I forget which track it was, maybe Waiting For You? But I knew I had to get him on Fortune 500.

When he sent me Midnight Ride, I was floored. It was different from much of the albums I'd heard in the scene at the time, and looking back, was an early adopter in the VHS Pop territory. I used to go on daily walks during the spring and summer with my mp3 player in one hand and a water bottle in the other, and though I had plenty of albums I listened to, Midnight Ride was one of my three hype up go-tos. I do not like ranking any Fortune 500 albums, we saw what happened when another label chose to do that with terrible results, plus I think that is mean! But I will say that Midnight Ride holds a special place in my heart, and I'm so thrilled to have given it the platform it deserved.

Arctic Contact gave me a heads up that Midnight Ride was getting a tape release, and my first reaction was "FUCKING FINALLY." Video 2000's only cassette release had a terribly poor rollout on a label I refuse to name, and I remember coming back online and wondering why Midnight Ride never got a chance to shine in a cassette setting. Arctic Contact did a stellar job in giving Eternal its well-deserved flowers, and I knew that Midnight Ride would be treated just as wonderfully. But THE REMIXES? BABY.

BABY.

The remix side is a who's who of modern VHS Pop, sprinkled with cool vaporhomies, even a Mabisyo feature! And everybody killed it. I felt such pride, like I was watching my baby grow up and it's not even my damn child. I love when Fortune 500 alumni get their flowers, and I consider Fortune 500 artists to be family.

If you've not checked Midnight Ride out, I highly recommend you do! And if you've heard the album already, have you at least checked out the remixes? Because they're absolute bops.

Have a track from the original album:

And have a track from the remix side:

The cassettes have long sold out, but you can still check this album out at the link below:

Sorry I've been so quiet; January was a busy busy busy month for me, between releasing a new 1-800-TONIGHT album, working on two URL sets, doing visuals for a Twin Peaks-related show in the IRL realm, and admittedly...a bit of a crisis. The burnout has been real, and this post has been long overdue. Hopefully I'll be returning to a more frequent posting schedule again soon! xoxo

Links post for December 9, 2024

Good evening! Sorry for the silence. I've been working on URL sets and getting three episodes of my online radio show, Neon Nights completed since December's gonna be crazy eventful for yours truly. This will be another megalinks post of Cool Albums and New Releases. As always, links will open in a new window! Here we go.

Cool Albums

clust.r - ever chance - River has been killing it, first and foremost. Between running a killer label, releasing two albums on my favorite label of all time, and the album I am linking here, he's been absolutely fucking killing it. clust.r is def not a typical vaporwave album and is more of a cool experimental, glitchy pop record. It's catchy, it's pretty, it's chaotic in the best way.
Atlas Cries - Night 露 - Enraile's third and latest release on the Shatterfoil label under his slushwave alias is most certainly a gorgeous album. Sure, it's a bit more simplistic in the samples, primarily using J-Pop material, but he has killer taste in sample curation. It kept me great company driving home in the middle of rush hour traffic, a soothing balm to the stressors of shitty drivers around me. Give it a listen!
Real Player 7 - Opportunity - I downloaded this album years ago and finally listened to it recently. I'm unsure if many of you are familiar with the label Crystal Magic, but this was once upon a time a label based in New Zealand that hosted quite a few indie/electronic/early 2010s internet music, and a bit later, shifted into releasing vaporwave and vapor-adjacent releases from Power Nap, Eyeliner, and Real Player 7 (a project by the person behind the label himself). Unfortunately, he deleted the Bandcamp page many years ago, but if you'd like to read about the history of this label, a lovely homie by the name of Michael Brown has you covered. Fun fact: Michael is also doing a 33⅓ book on Eyeliner's Buy Now, which you can pre-order here. Anywho, all of that aside, Real Player 7's Opportunity, released in 2013, was so far ahead of its time. I feel like, in a different world, it would be just as esteemed as Eyeliner's releases, or the PrismCorp Virtual Enterprises releases. It's midified corporate muzak at its finest, with titles such as Officechair Meditations and Outlook 2013 that sound exactly how you'd think they'd sound. Also, highlighting the track Inner City Reflections, because it merges vaporwave and drum and bass in a way that would be extremely appreciated in present day vaporwave. Since the album no longer exists online, it seems, I've uploaded it to Mediafire. Enjoy!
International Telecom - Новый Мир - You may remember my post about the immaculate 3a.m.Signals, but don't go into this album expecting a sequel. Instead, go into it expecting the cousin of one of my favorite signalwave albums of all time, Synthetik/PROGRESSIVE REGRESSION by Kanal Vier & FUJIWARA INTERCOM. Filled to the brim with late 90s/early 2000s commercials that take you back to the days of ads toying with futuristic imagery and everything being transparent or translucent, this album is short but very sweet. I need more albums like this, and I truly hope somebody takes on a project like this and really expands on the looping so these tracks don't end as abruptly as they begin. (See: FUJIWARA INTERCOM - FUTURE IS HERE, from the album linked above!)
Incarta '95 - ON THE RUN - This album, based upon a fake movie about a missing man who appears after 30 years and sends a letter and CD to a news station about where he's been, shifts from vaporwave to synthwave, even into house music a little bit. Another short but sweet album that I'm glad I checked out. I may have discovered it through a Retail Archaeology video, since this one came out shortly after my computer croaked. This is an interesting concept album with some bangers, especially the track Open Road.
g h o s t i n g - 2D FUN AT GRID WORLD! - GodfuckingDAMNIT, THIS IS STILL SO GOOD. I hadn't listened to it in years, and after hearing it a few days ago, I knew I had to include this and possibly introduce or re-introduce you all to this hypnagogic pop classic. I know many of you know g h o s t i n g for his fantastic vaporwave and broken transmission albums, but this album takes what Telenights started and goes full zany, using commercial blocks in this album to enhance what already sounds like music inspired by 80s Saturday Morning Cartoon blocks. It's incredible. If you're into Boy Snacks, Punks on Mars, or James Ferraro during the On Air and Night Dolls With Hairspray era, give it a listen. If you have no idea what any of these references are, listen to g h o s t i n g and then click on those other links.
Late Arcane - Prestige - This was going to be in the New Releases section, but after hearing it a few days ago, I knew I had to include it here. This is a fucking fabulous follow up to Extravagance, with songs that are signature Late Arcane at this point, but also tracks sampled from 80s italo disco and funk, some AOR sprinkled in there, even something that reminds me of 90s R&B my sister used to listen to. It's a really fun listen. If Late Arcane chooses to upload his set from this past weekend's album launch stream, check it out for Little White Flower alone, and see how crazy his fingers go on that one. If you don't find yourself headbanging to that track btw, I don't know what's wrong with you.

Other cool albums I recommend you check out are Bathroom Plants' Garden of Accrescent Vistas (which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL) and 「黒田坊」Kurotabō's 布団の音響タイムライン '81-'93 (classic vaporwave album that does sample a lot of 80s mainstream pop and synth music, but it's fun!).

DJ VIOLENCE - VAPORMEMPHIS FORECAST 2, Video Interface - Visual Anthropology, Torn Hawk - Through Force of Will

This post is gonna be a bit different than some of the others you've seen! It's part album highlight post, part cool albums post. Let's do this.

DJ VIOLENCE - VAPORMEMPHIS FORECAST 2

This release gave me flashbacks to Video 2000's Midnight Ride and to this incredible Kodak Cameo x Clipse mashup by Reverb Lite, two absolute masterclasses of mashing up rap and hip hop elements with vaporwave, as well as strip_silence's killer marty_memphis mashups (that hopefully he'll release officially sometime soon). DJ VIOLENCE really fucking elevates it here in a way that is fresh, fun, and truly exciting. Though some of the samples he used on the vaporwave side have been used repeatedly throughout the years, the way he uses them is just...chef's kiss. Magnificent. This 18 year old kid from Russia who wears his love of Memphis rap and phonk on his sleeve (I mean, look at these Pen & Pixel-stylized album covers) really blew it out of the water here, and I am really looking forward to checking out more from his discography and hearing his future output. It was hard picking a favorite here, so so so hard. But here's a goodie:

Video Interface - Visual Anthropology

Though this is another album from The Expanding Earth, this one veers into familiar and lovely signalwave territories, with its tracks sounding like rips from nature and meditational VHS tapes with an occasional clip or two from a commercial break. All of these tracks are pleasant, borderline classical at times, borderline medieval/dungeon sounding in others (and despite the sonic differences, overall it sounds cohesive). I also have to give a quick shoutout to how Video Interface effectively changes and slows the pitch in some of these tracks, much like in ways that ショッピングワールドjp/shopping world jp used to do. I've heard some folks do pitch changes mid-beat that...some can do it right, many don't. Wanderer in Time and Ancient Inscription are two tracks that really do it correctly. This album really hit during a drive around town on a gray day, but I'm sure it's peak beauty if heard in the middle of a walk through a strolling garden.

You can find the album digitally and physically at the link below:

https://theexpandingearth.bandcamp.com/album/visual-anthropology

Torn Hawk - Through Force of Will

This album just turned ten years old this year, and still remains a underrated hypnagogic pop classic. Torn Hawk's output was always a bit polarizing for me, but Through Force of Will is a powerhouse of an album, and it still remains as one of my favorites of all-time. When this album came out, I was in the middle of reliving my 90s video rental/Sneak Prevue nostalgia in full force, and this visual teaser of the album consisting of datamoshed movie clips spoke to me (along with what is still one of my favorite track titles, Damaged With Jeremy Irons, too fucking good). This was also during what I consider to be Not Not Fun's peak, where the label was releasing banger after banger album, and once again they knocked it out of the park with this one. I'll probably eventually talk about another NNF release here pretty soon, since I actually also affiliate my 90s video rental nostalgia return with another one of their releases and I kind of think of the album as Through Force of Will's second cousin. Through Force of Will is part pop, part shoegaze, part psychedelic, part "this sounds like a riff from a Billy Idol track", it's everything.

Life has been busy lately, with IRL things going on while trying to work on multiple URL sets and Neon Nights to boot. I'm hoping to get back into the swing of posting a bit more frequently again, but bear with me!

The Late Night Lofi compilations

One night in late 2010, my ex and I decided to drive back to our hometown in the middle of the night instead of waiting to do so in the early morning. The air was brisk and his window was broken and permanently cracked. It was a very foggy evening, a bit spooky actually and extremely dangerous, and his radio was broken, which gave me a lot of time to think while continuously scanning for deer. This song kept playing in my head, and I thought about making a cool mix based upon that very creepy, sorta lo-fi sound that this particular Tobacco track and this eerie, foggy drive really epitomized, but what to call it? "Late Night Lofi" was what popped into my mind. Alas, I never made that mix, but the words "Late Night Lofi" stuck with me to use one day.

As I mentioned in the International Telecom post, I found vaporwave in 2011 and finally understood it after hearing Midnight Television's self-titled album. From there, I was on the prowl for anything that sounded like what I'd heard through Laserdisc Visions and Midnight Television. I did find a couple of albums via Midnight Television's short-lived blog, Moonlit TV Dinner, and I did find others through lurking around Facebook pages and groups, as well as stalking people's Last.fm accounts. After a year of finding gems and falling in love, I chose to make a mix of the songs I'd considered to be highlights and tracks that sounded like the concept of "driving at dusk and continuing on well into the night", and decided that Late Night Lofi would be the absolute perfect name for this mix of 'whatever the fuck this genre is'. Newbreed, gunk, etc.

Here we are, 12 years later, and I just released the seventh installment of the series. Late night lofi has also been adopted into a genre (because of course I was gonna use my own mix name and inspiration when releasing luxury elite albums!) and even has become its own festival, which is extremely flattering and hella cool. Never did I envision this to happen when I created the first mix, any of this. Anyway, here are all of the mixes, and I'll make sure to post the download links for each one. Enjoy.

International Telecom - 3a.m.Signals

Summer 2011: I downloaded Laserdisc Visions' New Dreams LTD. I wanted so badly to understand it, but I felt more confused than anything, especially after being so enamored for months with the perfection that still is Vektroid's Telnet Erotika. At this point, we were still a year and a half away from the first use of 'vaporwave' as a genre name, and all I knew about whatever I was hearing from New Dreams LTD. was "this sounds...different." Nonetheless, I downloaded everything I could find of the other Beer on the Rug releases, and what made me fully get whatever this newfangled genre was, was Midnight Television's self-titled album.

A decade before, I was looking longingly out my window facing the second busiest street in my hometown at 1:00 a.m., seeing people drive by and wondering where they were going, why they were out so late, what my town even had to offer at night. If I wasn't staring out the window, I was surfing online, looking around for Incubus-related media and thinking about how I wanted a shirt from T-Shirt Hell. My choices. Or I was in my bedroom, flipping through the channels, either stumbling onto color bars or George Foreman Grill paid programming, eventually settling on The Weather Channel as I got ready for bed. All of that to say: Midnight Television, within a ten minute album, hit every mark and sent me back to my early days of high school and the memories I mentioned above. Since then I'd chased and looked and downloaded so many albums in the broken transmission/signalwave genre for an album that would hit me in a similar way, or at least have a similar vibe, and I'd say International Telecom's 3a.m.Signals hits pretty close.

Nine tracks and four bonus tracks of music you'd hear or wish to hear as you channel surfed in the middle of the night, damn well knowing you're not going to find anything outside of paid programming, color bars, Girls Gone Wild commercials and phone sex ads, and uninteresting classic movies. Knowing you need to go to sleep but being too stubborn to do so. Wishing that you could go explore your hometown at night as you saw others do but lacking the courage and a driver's license. Originally released in early 2023 via TVVIN_PINEZ_M4LL's label, B O G U S // COLLECTIVE, this album later got a cassette release via Aexion's label, Enterprise, which sold out. I am jealous of all of you who have this one on tape, truly. This album has some top notch sampling choices and provides the most comforting vibes that I'd last experienced with 猫 シ Corp.'s NEWS AT 11. I don't know if these comparisons will help in enticing you to check this album out if you've not done so, but LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM. Just fucking do it.

General Translator - Operation Eternal Ecstasy (and a few new releases)

I was sad to see the announcement earlier this year that the General Translator project is over, but it got me to finally download and check out the things I'd missed since my disappearance in 2016. Released in 2017 and released on cassette via Bedlam Tapes, this album feels like a long lost soundtrack to a Blade Runner-inspired, noir-utopia video game that I would figure got its release through Sega Dreamcast. Each track takes you into its own world of exploration, whether it's in a seedy alleyway (A Murder in Cold Blood [Stage 1]), a bizarre alt bar (surface web voyeur), or in a back room that doubles as a save point (stellar moth collection). As a lady who loves the moodier side of vaporwave, this album really hits the spot. My favorite on the album, meet me in the Tart Cloud Club, is definitely the level where you're meeting up with a very attractive assassin in a dimly lit restaurant (like this), where the objective is to seduce, then murder. Quick shoutout to Digital Sex/Dreaming Diary for the cool cover art!

You may find the album for free digitally at the link below:

While you're there, give Parasensory a listen. It's not only General Translator's last album, but it feels like it fits within Operation Eternal Ecstasy's world (or at least is a secret door in OEE that leads you to Parasensory), and it's really fucking good. We'll miss you, General Translator.

Before I close this out, a few more new releases. As always, links will open in a new window.

Links post for September 23, 2024

It has been a year and some change since I have posted anything on this channel, whoops. I had mentioned in a Bluesky post that I refuse to call a 'skeet' that I was interested in using a blog to post new releases and albums that have stood out to me lately, and I realized that like...I already have a blog that I could easily use to make this happen. So let's see if I can get the determination to use this place more frequently. The new releases were found through Bandcamp emails, and the cool albums are...well, cool albums. All links will open in a new window. I tried to add the covers' thumbnails to this post, but Blogger will not cooperate with me. Apologies!

Cool Albums:

trndytrndy - Virtua - A cover can sell a record, and this cover is an absolute perfect representation for how this album sounds.
Fan Fiordo - Comfort / Interior - Utopian virtual moodiness. If you like FM Skyline and Eyeliner, check this out.
Skyglow - discreet phone affairs - The late night lofi vibes are immaculate.
Mom and Dad's Computer - clubhouse - Frutiger Aero-inspired, very bitcrushed, excellent sample selections. I'd say it's one of my favorites this year.
Corrupt Save - Channel Surf - His strongest album yet, in my opinion. Good looped moments and curated vocal choices.
climbing waterfalls - Secondwindroom - Another Frutiger Aero-inspired album, slushified for your pleasure. Listened to it while walking around the mall recently, and it was a perfect combo.
